This course examines key concepts such as structural violence, identity-based conflict, and post-conflict reconciliation. Students will engage with real-world case studies to understand how cultural, political, and historical dynamics shape conflicts—and how sustainable peace can be fostered through inclusive dialogue, justice, and community-led initiatives

Explores the emotional, psychological, and social impact of conflict and violence on individuals and communities. The course emphasizes the importance of acknowledging pain, restoring dignity, and creating safe spaces for storytelling and mutual understanding. Students will learn about trauma-informed approaches, traditional and cultural healing practices, and mechanisms for fostering reconciliation across divided societies. By integrating theory with practical tools, the course equips participants to support healing processes that lead to sustainable peace and restored relationships.

Youth peace clubs

Over the last decade there has been a growing realization that peacebuilding, development, and humanitarian assistance sometimes feed conflict rather than alleviate it, and that they sometimes exacerbate tensions. This has led to the development of tools to understand the relationship between programming and conflict. This course is designed to equip participants with the skills, knowledge and attitudes to analyze, develop and apply strategies to deal with the complexities of providing assistance, development and peacebuilding with better outcomes for the societies where assistance is provided. Participants will be introduced to frameworks of analysis for reducing complexity and managing uncertainty; conflict sensitive approaches, strategies for integrating these approaches into their programming. The main goal of this module is to introduce participants to the ideas, concepts and approaches of conflict sensitivity and Do No Harm in order to improve and enhance their values and principles to understanding, application and monitoring of conflict-sensitive programming. At the end of the week, the participants are expected to: 1. Understand the relevance of conflict sensitivity within the framework of their organizational work, even where it may appear foreign to the fields of intervention. 2. Situate conflict sensitivity within program and organizational policies and operations. 3. See conflict sensitivity as not necessarily a new approach, or an additional component to organizational work

Tirzah Hea Halder is a dedicated youth development and program management professional with extensive experience in the non-profit sector. Currently serving as a Program Coordinator at Mennonite Central Committee, she has built strong expertise in project coordination, partner engagement, monitoring and evaluation, and cross-cultural facilitation. She holds a Master’s degree in Governance and Development Studies from Jahangirnagar University and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Heriot-Watt University. With additional certifications in data analysis, visualization, and program management, Tirzah is particularly passionate about environment, gender and development, and youth empowerment, bringing both academic knowledge and practical skills to her work in building stronger communities.

GLPI PEACE EDUCATION CLUBS PROGRAM As peacemakers, we believe that the development of the whole world in general, and of Africa, especially the Great Lakes Region of Africa in particular, will come from impowerment and self-reliance of the current generation. Education is an imperative effort to prepare the next generation to build a peaceful and prosperous Africa that is capable of finding solutions to its problems. In order to achieve a meaningful learning environment, children need to be free from all forms of violence in their homes, schools, and communities, and to know their rights and responsibilities. Observation électorale en cours au Burundi 🌍 Le 05 Juin 2025 OBSERVATEURS MEMBRES DU CHAPITRE DE BUJUMBURA OBSERVATEURS MEMBRES DU CHAPITRE DE GITEGA Depuis 2024, le Great Lakes Peacebuilding Initiative (GLPI) s’engage activement dans le renforcement de la démocratie au Burundi en organisant des formations essentielles sur la bonne gouvernance, la gestion des cycles électoraux, le monitoring et l’observation des élections. Ces initiatives ont été destinées aux leaders des chapitres de Gitega et Bujumbura, ainsi qu’aux membres des institutions étatiques telles que la police, la magistrature et les autorités territoriales. Fort de ces formations, le GLPI passe désormais à l’action avec le déploiement de ses observateurs. À ce jour, 50 observateurs qualifiés, tous lauréats et membres des chapitres de Bujumbura et Gitega, ont été mobilisés pour suivre de près le déroulement des scrutins en cours. Le 5 juin 2025 marque un moment crucial dans cette démarche, avec le déploiement effectif de ces observateurs sur le terrain. Leur mission : garantir la transparence des élections législatives et communales au Burundi, et contribuer à renforcer la démocratie, la paix et la stabilité dans la région. Ce engagement témoigne de la volonté du GLPI de soutenir un processus électoral libre, équitable et pacifique.
